Gesso, chiefly associated with oil painting, creates a barrier separating the paint from the wood so that colors stay true and do not dry out. Acrylic medium is another option in place of gesso. It shares the same formulation as acrylic paint but lacks pigment. It comes in three weights — medium, gel or paste — and two finishes, matte or gloss. If you feel confident about your imagery, you can sketch directly onto the gesso as an underpainting (a method used by masters such as Da Vinci and Michelangelo), or you can start without any sketch at all. By mixing acrylic paint with a medium, you can explore different qualities of the paint: making it thicker or thinner, lighter or darker, glossier or more matte. Because wood is heavy, it lets you apply multiple layers without warping, which is a frequent issue with paper or canvas. How your finished piece turns out will depend on any combination of these factors. For instance, using a matte medium product together with metallic acrylics can give the finished piece the appearance of a metallic bas relief. Try out wood panels and paints in different sizes to get to know the surface and the media.",[16,111,114],{"title":112,"type":113},"Warning","warning",[43,115,116],{},"Paint in a space with good ventilation; even though acrylics are comparatively nontoxic compared with oils, certain colors include mercury, arsenic or cadmium to achieve the needed pigmentation.",{"title":118,"searchDepth":119,"depth":119,"links":120},"",2,[121,122,123,124],{"id":57,"depth":119,"text":58},{"id":69,"depth":119,"text":70},{"id":81,"depth":119,"text":82},{"id":93,"depth":119,"text":94},null,{"slug":127,"name":128,"path":129},"art-projects","Art Projects",[130,133,136],{"slug":131,"name":132},"lifestyle","Lifestyle",{"slug":134,"name":135},"crafts","Crafts",{"slug":127,"name":128},[131,134,127],31817,{"src":49,"srcset":140,"width":50,"height":48,"alt":141},"\u002Ffiles\u002F2a1df1bda05e3e95ac63.webp 400w, \u002Ffiles\u002Fdc3bde580c7481c99501.webp 800w, \u002Ffiles\u002Fe55162114d0378d8404f.webp 1600w","...","Wood is a classic painting support that offers distinctive grain, yet its porous nature often calls for sealing before acrylics are applied.
