Measure both the powder and the water with a measuring cup so the proportions are precise. Adding too much water lengthens the drying time. Should part of the quick-set begin to dry while you are spreading it, do not introduce more water. Instead, keep stirring the mix as you work so it stays hydrated. If the mortar becomes too dry to spread, throw it out and prepare a fresh batch. Trying to dry the quick-set faster than that can harm the quality of the bond. Always prepare and install the product according to the manufacturer's directions, since those instructions already cut drying time substantially. Mix only as much quick-set as you can spread and cover with tile within 20 minutes. Do not try to stretch the drying time shorter by spreading the mortar thinner than the manufacturer recommends, because the tile will not bond properly. To check whether the tile has set, press your putty knife against the side of the tile at several spots around the room. If it holds firm against a solid push, it has set. Wait until at least the minimum drying time has elapsed before testing.
