While it is true that plants rely on carbon dioxide for photosynthesis—the process that turns solar energy into a form they can use—they also carry out respiration to access that energy. For this activity, you will need purple cabbage indicator water, which shifts color when acids or bases are introduced: it becomes red with acid and blue with base. Submerge a small aquatic plant completely in a test tube filled with this indicator water. Then cover the test tube with aluminum foil to block out light. After a few days, the water will change color because the carbon dioxide released by the plant has dissolved in the water to form carbonic acid. (To make this a proper experiment, you can set up a control by wrapping a test tube that contains only the indicator water in foil as well.)",[16,42,43],{},"Note: Instead of indicator water, you can use an oxygen probe. To find out, add a second variable: place an uncovered test tube with the same contents next to the foil-wrapped one. Check both tubes about every 12 hours and compare the colors of the indicator water. The dark tube will show more carbonic acid—meaning a redder color—than the light tube, because plants respire more efficiently in the dark and do not photosynthesize at all under those conditions.",[34,52,54],{"id":53},"plant-size-and-species","Plant Size and Species",[16,56,57],{},"Another experiment can examine how a plant's size and type influence the speed of respiration.
