Using Glue and Yarn to Make Durable Ornaments

With just white glue, yarn, wax paper, a cup, and scissors, you can turn flexible strands into rigid decorative shapes. The technique involves soaking yarn in glue, arranging it into a design, and letting it set for a day, resulting in a homemade ornament fit for a Christmas tree or window.

Brightly colored yarn can be stiffened so that it keeps whatever shape it is arranged into as it dries. The supplies needed for this process are common household items, and while the activity can get a bit messy, the finished piece makes an attractive ornament that can be hung on a Christmas tree or displayed in a window. Projects like these are well suited to young children and can be made during the holiday season as a handmade gift.

Step 1

Pour roughly 1 inch of white glue into a cup.

Step 2

Lay out a big sheet of wax paper to serve as your work area.

Step 3

Cut the yarn into segments measuring 1 foot each.

Step 4

Take 1 piece of yarn and submerge it in the white glue, making sure it is completely coated.

Step 5

Place the yarn on the wax paper and form it into whatever design you like. You could make an abstract pattern or a basic shape such as a star or an angel outline.

Step 6

Add additional strands of glue-coated yarn to the design so that it becomes more stable.

Step 7

Leave the design on the wax paper to dry for a full day. Once it has dried completely, it will hold a rigid shape.
