Crafting a Parrot Beak Prop From Paper Cones and Papier-Mache
A homemade parrot beak can round out a bird costume for Halloween, a play, or a themed party. Since costume shops do not always stock such a mask, this project builds one from paper cone hats, papier-mache, and a few basic craft supplies.

Make a parrot beak using basic craft supplies.
A parrot beak mask worn over the nose and mouth can add believability and a playful touch to a parrot costume assembled for a costume party, a theatrical production, or Halloween. Costume shops may not carry a parrot beak mask, but one can be made at home from a handful of items available at any arts and crafts supply store.
Step 1
Curve the tips of two paper cone hats by bending them. Overlap the two bent cones so that one hangs over the other, then join their openings with masking tape. Leave the elastic bands attached to the hats, since these can hold the parrot beak in place when worn.
Step 2
In a bowl, mix 1/2 cup of papier-mache pulp, 1/4 cup of flour, 1/8 cup of salt, and 1 cup of boiling water. Stir the combination with a spoon for two minutes, then let it cool for 20 minutes.
Step 3
Tear newspaper into strips measuring 1 inch wide by 3 inches long. One strip at a time, dip the pieces into the papier-mache mixture and lay them over the curved cone form until it is covered. Build up four layers of strips, then leave the form to dry for six hours.
Step 4
Using fine-grain sandpaper and small circular motions, smooth the surface of the parrot beak. Remove dust with a washcloth.
Step 5
Coat the parrot beak with orange acrylic paint and let it dry for 20 minutes. Over the paint, spread a thick layer of clear acrylic glaze and let that dry for another 20 minutes. The glaze keeps the paint from chipping and gives the beak a glossy finish.
