Protecting Painted Walls When Hanging Party Decorations

When celebrating a birthday or other occasion, you might want to personalize the space with wall hangings like posters, signs, banners, balloons, or crepe paper. However, using tape on painted walls can cause significant paint damage if you don't choose the right tape and remove it carefully.

Party decorations don’t have to damage your walls.

To make a birthday party or other festivity more memorable, you can personalize the space by putting up decorations on the walls. These decorations might include signs, posters, banners, balloons, or crepe paper. If you attach them to painted walls, the tape could cause considerable harm to the paint, unless you take great care in both how you hang the items and what kind of tape you use.

Step 1

Whenever you can, attach decorations to surfaces that aren't painted, like wood trim. Painted areas are the most vulnerable to damage.

Step 2

Choose tape designed for hanging posters instead of ordinary tape. This type is available at craft stores or party supply shops. It has less tackiness, which lowers the chance of peeling paint off the wall. There are also special adhesive strips that can be removed cleanly from painted walls, and they are made to hold items weighing from a few ounces up to several pounds.

Step 3

Apply the tape in small amounts. When putting up decorations, aim to use little pieces and only as much as necessary to keep them in place.

Step 4

When taking down the decorations, remove the tape very gently. Ripping it off quickly increases the risk of pulling paint away with the tape.
