Troubleshooting a Murray Riding Mower That Won't Shift Out of Neutral

When a Murray riding mower refuses to move from neutral, the problem often lies in the mechanical linkages that connect the shifter, brake, clutch, and drive belt. This guide covers the components to inspect—from the shifter assembly and its adjustment to the brake/clutch pedal and the motion drive belt—and explains how to diagnose and correct each potential issue.

Do some troubleshooting if your mower is stuck in neutral.

A Murray riding mower relies on a mechanical system to change gears, allowing you to choose from several forward and reverse settings for mowing. This system consists of various parts and linkages that work together with the brake and drive mechanisms. If you find that your Murray riding mower won't shift out of neutral, you should examine these components.

Shifter Assembly

The shifter assembly on a Murray riding mower operates independently from the clutch/brake and throttle assemblies. Even though the shifter is covered by a protective housing, debris or sticky substances can sometimes get into the gear shift area and cause the mechanism to jam, making it impossible to engage forward or reverse. You should also check the linkage that connects the gear shift to the drive axle. If this linkage is broken or blocked, shifting will be hindered.

Shifter Adjustment

As time passes, the shift lever on your Murray riding mower may become misaligned, so the lever's neutral position no longer corresponds to the gearbox's neutral position. To fix this, turn off the engine first, then detach the adjuster nut from the shift bracket. Move the gear shifter into the "neutral" position and push the mower forward until the gearbox also indicates neutral. Reattach the adjuster nut to the shift bracket while keeping both the shifter and gearbox in neutral.

Brake and Clutch

On Murray riding mowers, you must depress the clutch/brake pedal before you can use the shift lever. You also need to move the throttle lever to the slow position. If something interferes with the brake/clutch pedal, the gear shifter might remain stuck in neutral. Check the linkage between the clutch/brake assembly and the wheels as well. Any damage or obstruction should be fixed right away, as it also poses a safety hazard. The mower's operating manual provides instructions for adjusting the clutch if necessary.

Motion Drive Belt

After you select a gear with the shift lever, the motion drive belt runs around a pulley system to move the drive axle forward or backward. Over time, belts can wear out or become damaged from rough use or from objects getting caught between the belt and pulleys. Keeping your Murray mower clean helps prevent debris from interfering with the mechanics. Before each use, inspect the belts for slipping and wear. Also check the pulleys for any damage. Make sure no lubricants or grease come into contact with the belts, as this can cause slipping.
