Embody the elegance of nature by crafting your own dragonfly costume that's both simple to make and visually striking. The wings and body come together with basic techniques, and the finished piece pairs beautifully with a shift dress or tunic and tights. You can complete the wings in an afternoon. This pattern is easily adjusted for any size, whether for an adult or a child. Feel free to personalize the costume with your preferred colors and unleash your creativity.

Divide the Wire
Take the 14-gauge wire and cut it into two equal lengths of 9 feet each to form the wing frames. Each 9-foot piece will yield two wings. Take the first piece and cross it over itself to create a large figure-eight loop. This forms the base layer for your first pair of wings.
Form the Loops
Secure the wire at the center with tape. Keep looping the wire until the entire 9-foot length is used up.
Shape the Wing Frame
Pinch the wire loop's ends together so they taper to points at both extremities. Apply additional duct tape to the center, then wrap the entire wing shape with duct tape. Repeat the process to make the second set of wings.
Prepare the Pantyhose
Take both pairs of white queen-size pantyhose and cut off the legs. Keep the panty sections for later use.
Encase the Wings
Pull one leg section of pantyhose over each wing, stretching it to fit. Sew the hose securely at the wing's center. Trim off any excess material.
Position on Cardboard
Place the rectangular cardboard on a flat surface with the long side running vertically. Decide where the wings will go. The first set should be positioned 4 inches from the top edge of the cardboard. The second set goes 8 inches below the first set.

Attach the Wings
Use hot glue to attach the wings to the cardboard. For added stability, use an ice pick to punch holes near the center of each wing and tie them to the cardboard with leather cord.
Add Glitter
Spray the wings with white glitter spray paint and let them dry completely. If you like, create vein patterns by applying hot glue lines across the wings. Sprinkle silver glitter over the lines to finish the wings.
Make the Body
Cut one leg from the nude A size pantyhose and stuff it with cotton fiber fill.
Secure and Trim
Tie a knot at the open end of the stuffed leg and cut off any excess fabric.
Form the Segments
Cut the yarn into eight pieces, each 6 inches long. Tie the yarn around the stuffed leg at 3-inch intervals to create the dragonfly's segmented body.

Join Body to Wings
Hot glue the body onto the cardboard, positioning it over the top of the wings. Ensure that one end of the body extends past the top edge of the cardboard to hide the cardboard base.
Create the Straps
From the queen-size pantyhose, cut off the crotch section. Cut straight across slightly above the crotch to create a tube.
Find the Center
Fold the tube in half to locate its center point.
Finish the Costume
Hot glue the center of the tube to the underside of the dragonfly wings.
