In Greek mythology, Hermes serves as the messenger of the gods, delivering communications between them. He is typically depicted wearing a winged crown and winged sandals, which aid him in his duties. If you're planning to attend a masquerade or Halloween event as this mythological figure, you can assemble your own Hermes costume using muslin, spray paint, cardboard, and florist's wire.

Take Your Measurements

Record your height and the distance from one fingertip to the other across your outstretched arms. Cut a piece of white muslin fabric to these dimensions.

Prepare the Fabric

Lay the fabric flat on your work surface, ensuring the arm span measurement forms the width and your height forms the length. Fold the top edge downward by 18 inches. Then fold the entire piece in half lengthwise. Using a sewing machine, stitch the lengthwise hems together with a 1/4-inch seam allowance.

Form the Chiton

Step into the resulting tube of muslin. Pull the fabric up over your left shoulder and gather it there. Fasten it with a simple gold-toned brooch, pushing the pin through both the front and back layers of the muslin to create the traditional Greek garment known as a chiton.

Add the Gold Rope

Greek gods

Take a 48-inch length of gold-toned rope and tie it around your waist, allowing the ends to dangle. Adjust the top of the chiton so it puffs out slightly above the rope.

Choose Simple Sandals

Wear a pair of plain, earthy sandals—such as brown or black leather with no decoration—to complete the look.

Measure and Twist the Wire

Using a fabric measuring tape, measure the circumference of your head just above your ears. Cut a piece of florist wire to that length plus one extra inch. Twist the ends together to form a loop.

Draw and Cut the Wings

On a piece of cardboard, sketch two wings, each about 6 inches long. Refer to an image of Hermes to guide the shape. Cut them out.

Attach and Paint the Wings

Insert a 4-inch piece of florist wire into the bottom edge of each wing. If needed, secure with hot glue. Spray paint both the wings and the attached wire gold. Let them dry completely.

Secure the Wings to the Crown

Greek Goddess

Twist the protruding wire from each cardboard wing around the wire loop to attach them at the sides, positioning them just above where your ears will be. Wrap gold-toned fabric tape around the entire crown until it is fully covered, completing your Hermes costume.
