Take on the role of the Boos' ruler this Halloween by creating a costume inspired by King Boo from the Mario franchise. As the leader of the Boos in Luigi's Mansion, King Boo offers a fun costume option. You can team up with friends dressed as other Mario characters for a unique group theme. Even if you wear it alone, this King Boo costume will draw attention.

Inflate the Beach Ball

Start by blowing up a large beach ball. This will serve as the base for the papier mache head of your King Boo costume.

Mix the Papier Mache Paste

In a large bowl, stir together 1/2 cup of flour, a pinch of salt, and water until you get a sticky paste that isn't too thin.

Layer the Papier Mache onto the Ball

Dip strips of newspaper into the paste and press them onto the beach ball, smoothing with your fingers. Apply at least seven to nine layers of strips.

Let the papier mache dry completely before taking out the beach ball. To remove it, deflate the ball by piercing it with a sharp object like a knife, then pull the deflated ball through a small hole you cut in the dried newspaper.

Paint the Papier Mache Ball

Cover the entire papier mache ball with white craft paint using a large brush. You might need multiple coats to fully cover the newspaper and achieve a uniform white color.

Cut Openings in the Ball

Using a craft knife, cut holes in the papier mache ball: one on each side for your arms, one at the bottom for your body and head, and one in the front for your face so you can see and breathe.

Since the costume goes over your head, shoulders, and upper torso, make the bottom hole big enough to slip the costume on and off without trouble.

Draw King Boo's Face

Use a black permanent marker to sketch King Boo's face onto the ball. If you prefer, you can paint the face with black craft paint instead.

Add a Tongue

Cut a tongue shape from pink felt and glue it onto the costume with tacky glue. While it dries, use clamps to hold the tongue in place.

Attach the Crown

Glue a store-bought gold crown to the top of the King Boo costume.

Put on Your Costume

Wear the King Boo costume over a black shirt, black pants, and shoes to finish the look.
