MTD Snowblower Oil Change: A Step-by-Step Guide

Small engines in snowthrowers, snow blowers, lawn mowers, and rototillers rely on oil for operation. MTD suggests checking oil levels every five hours of use, while an oil change might only be necessary after 25 hours. Machines using a gasoline and 2-stroke oil mix, when blended correctly, do not need separate oil changes.

Keep fresh oil in an MTD snowblower.

Small engines that power equipment like snowthrowers, snow blowers, lawn mowers, and rototillers need oil to run. MTD advises checking the oil after every five hours of operation. However, an oil change may not be required until 25 hours of use. Certain models lack a separate oil compartment; they run on a mixture of gasoline and 2-stroke oil and, if mixed properly, do not require separate oil changes.

Step 1

Operate the machine until the fuel tank is empty. Disconnect the sparkplug wire so the machine cannot start while being serviced.

Step 2

Take off the oil cap and dipstick. Tip the snowblower onto its side to let the oil drain into an old milk carton or another disposable container.

Step 3

Set the snowblower on a level surface. Pour in SAE 30 weight motor oil. Be careful not to overfill the oil tank.

Step 4

Put the dipstick and oil cap back in place. Dispose of the used oil according to local and state regulations.
