A Step-by-Step Guide to Swapping Out a Delta Bathtub Spout

Installing a Delta tub spout varies based on the wall plumbing: iron pipe, slip-on, or copper pipe. Each type has its own specific steps and tools.

Delta offers a range of styles and finishes for three distinct tub spout types, each corresponding to the plumbing configuration behind the bathroom wall: iron pipe, slip-on, and copper pipe. The installation method differs accordingly.

Iron Pipe Installation

Step 1

Insert a large flat screwdriver into the opening at the bottom of the existing spout. Rotate the spout counterclockwise to detach it from the iron pipe.

Step 2

Remove any old Teflon tape from the pipe nipple threads. Wrap new Teflon tape clockwise around the threads three times, pressing it firmly into the grooves.

Step 3

Thread the new Delta spout onto the pipe by turning it clockwise. Cover the spout with a towel and use adjustable pliers to tighten it further until it sits flush against the wall with the opening pointing down into the tub.

Slip-On Installation

Step 1

Use a hex wrench in the opening underneath the spout. Turn it counterclockwise to loosen and remove the screw.

Step 2

With both hands and moderate force, pull the old spout away from the tub wall. Discard it.

Step 3

Slide the Delta spout onto the copper pipe until it contacts the wall. Insert the new hex screw into the bottom opening.

Step 4

Attach a hex wrench to the screw and turn clockwise to tighten it completely.

Copper Pipe Installation

Step 1

Put a large screwdriver into the spout's opening. Rotate counterclockwise to unscrew and remove the old spout, then discard it.

Step 2

Using adjustable pliers, pull the O-ring off the copper pipe and set it aside.

Step 3

Solder the tub spout adapter from the spout kit onto the copper tube protruding from the wall.

Step 4

With a hacksaw, cut off the excess tube just in front of the O-ring groove.

Step 5

Slide the new O-ring from the spout kit into the O-ring groove at the end of the brass adapter.

Step 6

Thread the Delta spout onto the pipe near the wall by turning it clockwise until it is hand-tight and rests against the wall with the opening facing down into the tub.
