Swapping Out a Broken Pull Chain Switch on a Table Lamp

When the pull chain of a table lamp breaks off at its base, the entire socket shell needs to be replaced. This guide walks through the process, from disassembly to installing a new socket with a pull chain, emphasizing electrical safety.

Replace the pull chain if it snaps off.

Many table lamps use a pull chain as their switch, and over time, even a well-made chain may break. If the break occurs just a few inches from the end, a chain extender can solve the problem. However, when the chain breaks right at the base of the pull, replacing the whole socket shell becomes necessary. Always exercise caution with electrical components, as improper handling can lead to electric shock.

Step 1

Disconnect the lamp from the power outlet. Take off the lampshade and unscrew the light bulb.

Step 2

Detach the socket shell from its base. This cylindrical part holds the switch. If it resists coming out, insert a screwdriver between the base and the shell and gently pry it loose.

Step 3

Remove the socket base from the lamp by gripping the nut underneath with pliers and turning the base until it comes off.

Step 4

Use wire cutters to sever the two wires connecting the socket and the base.

Step 5

Remove the plastic insulation from the wires, exposing about ½ inch of bare wire.

Step 6

Create a knot in the wires exiting the socket base. This knot keeps the wires from being pulled out if the cord is yanked.

Step 7

Locate the neutral wire, which is the one with a rib on its plastic covering. Bend this wire clockwise around the silver screw located just below the screw head on the new socket, then tighten the screw. Take the remaining wire and wrap it clockwise around the other screw, and tighten that screw as well.

Step 8

Feed the cord through the bottom of the lamp and push the socket into the socket base.

Step 9

Reinstall the light bulb and lampshade.
