Reviving Worn Concrete Surfaces Without Full Replacement

Concrete slabs often develop cracks and chips over time. Rather than demolishing and recasting the whole floor, a resurfacing approach can fill damaged areas and apply a fresh thin concrete layer, potentially also changing color or texture. The required materials are available at hardware or home improvement retailers.

Concrete floors frequently suffer from chipping and cracking as time passes. Instead of removing the entire surface and pouring a new slab, resurfacing offers a more efficient and economical alternative. This method repairs cracks and applies a thin new layer of concrete over the existing surface. If you desire a different color or texture, resurfacing can achieve that as well. You can buy or rent the necessary tools and materials from a hardware or home improvement store.

Step 1

Use a pressure washer to clean the whole slab thoroughly, removing any dirt, dust, or grime. Focus especially on cracks to ensure they contain no debris like dirt or loose concrete fragments.

Step 2

In a 5-gallon bucket, combine concrete resurfacer with water as directed by the manufacturer.

Step 3

Pour the prepared mixture straight into the cracks in the concrete.

Step 4

Use a trowel to push the mixture firmly into the cracks.

Step 5

Level the surface of the poured concrete and allow it to dry overnight.

Step 6

Following the manufacturer's instructions, mix the concrete dressing. This product is significantly thinner than concrete resurfacer.

Step 7

Moisten the concrete with a hose so it does not dry too fast. This provides enough time to level and smooth the top.

Step 8

Pour the dressing across the entire concrete slab. Drag a rubber squeegee over the surface to achieve an even, smooth, and level finish.

Step 9

Allow it to cure for at least one day before allowing cars or foot traffic on it.
