How to Deal with Spray Foam Insulation Spills on Carpeting
Spray foam insulation provides a comfortable alternative to fiberglass rolls, but it can create a mess if it lands on unprotected carpet. Immediate action is required to prevent the foam from hardening, which complicates removal. Basic supplies like rags, acetone, and scissors are needed for cleanup.

Cleaning foam insulation off carpeting is easier the sooner it is done.
Adding insulation can reliably lower energy costs for heating and cooling a home. Spray foam insulation offers a more comfortable material to handle. It eliminates the itching associated with fiberglass roll insulation, yet it remains a messy product. If foam insulation lands on carpet that isn't protected, it must be removed right away. Once the foam hardens, getting it out becomes somewhat harder.
Step 1
Use a dry, clean rag to wipe up any fresh drops of spray foam insulation from the carpet. To keep from pushing the foam deeper into the carpet pile, pinch it with the rag and pull upward.
Step 2
Apply a small amount of acetone to a rag and wipe the stained area. This will take care of any leftover material.
Step 3
Lift any dried pieces and angle them so you can see exactly where the insulation is stuck to the carpet fibers. Use scissors to cut the carpet fibers free.
Step 4
Dispose of the removed foam insulation chunks in the trash. Feel the carpet surface with your hand. Use the scissors to trim any spots that are uneven.
