Decorating a ceiling can add to a festive atmosphere.

Adding balloons to your ceiling can bring lively color and a celebratory feel to an area that might otherwise seem plain. It's important to decorate in a way that doesn't harm the ceiling, so you won't have to deal with repairs or frustration afterward. Beyond enhancing the party atmosphere, the balloons can also serve as game props or be given to guests as take-home favors.

Step 1

Inflate the balloons by mouth and secure each with a knot at the nozzle to keep the air inside. Because you'll be fastening the balloons to the ceiling, helium is not required for this approach.

Step 2

Take a piece of yarn, tie it around the knotted end of a balloon, then measure out roughly 2 inches and snip it with scissors. Choose yarn in a color that matches your party theme—for instance, orange or brown for a Halloween celebration. Yarn is preferable to string because its fibers grip the tape more effectively.

Step 3

From a roll of 1-inch wide painter's tape, cut a strip that is 1 inch long. Painter's tape has low tack, meaning it won't leave sticky residue on your ceiling and won't strip away paint; it also removes without trouble.

Step 4

Press the yarn against the ceiling, then lay the tape over it and stick the tape to the ceiling. Let the balloon settle downward; this will conceal both the yarn and the tape.

Step 1

On the day of your event, inflate the balloons with helium. Close each balloon with a knot or, if your helium kit includes them, use plugs. Fill as many balloons as needed to cover the ceiling of your party area.

Step 2

Take narrow curling ribbon—the type used for wrapping presents—and cut several lengths, each no shorter than 3 feet. Select a few colors that coordinate with your balloons and other decorations.

Step 3

Attach one end of each ribbon to a balloon. To curl the ribbon, pull the loose end across the edge of a scissor blade while pressing it with your thumb.

Step 4

Release the balloons so they rise to the ceiling, with their ribbons hanging at varying heights above the party area. As guests depart, they can reach up and take a few balloons home.
