Planning a Children's Mystery-Themed Birthday Celebration

For a kid's birthday party, you might plan sports for active kids or crafts for creative ones. But if the children enjoy acting, a mystery party can be a fun option. It takes preparation, but it keeps kids entertained as they play characters and work together to solve a puzzle.

When you're organizing a birthday celebration for kids, you'll want to think about ways to keep everyone entertained. For kids who enjoy sports, you could set up athletic activities; for those who lean toward art, craft projects might work well. If the birthday child and their friends are inclined toward drama, though, or if you'd like to spark their imagination further, a murder mystery party could be a great fit. Such themed events call for planning and preparation, but once the game is set up, your young guests will have hours of fun as they step into various roles and collaborate to crack a case.

Step 1

Choose a ready-made murder mystery game. You can locate these on the internet, where they may be downloaded and printed, or in retail stores. After downloading, print out all the necessary materials.

Step 2

Go through the materials thoroughly. Since you're the host, you'll be the only one who knows the full picture—every child will portray a different character in the story, so make sure you're familiar with which character is aware of what.

Step 3

Get costumes ready for each character. They don't need to be fancy; a single memorable item, such as a hat, can do the job. Also make name tags so the children can easily remember who is playing whom.

Step 4

Use any props mentioned in the game instructions, or ones you feel match the characters, to decorate the room. Put on some eerie, suspenseful music in the background.

Step 5

Welcome the guests by giving them their costumes, name tags, and character details—each child begins with specific information about their character.

Step 6

Kick off the mystery by declaring what has supposedly "occurred," and let the children know they'll be part of an investigation.

Step 7

Give out clue cards. The game proceeds in rounds. In every round, you hand out clue cards that provide additional details and push the narrative forward. Once players receive the new information, they should mix and chat with one another, sharing what they've learned—or attempting to keep it hidden.

Step 8

When the game wraps up, celebrate and compliment the children on solving the mystery.
