Make your baby a cuddly fleece lovey.
A lovey that features an animal head blends the coziness of a baby blanket with the familiar feel of a plush toy's head. While such items are available in many baby specialty shops, making one yourself adds a personal touch. By sewing a fleece animal head and attaching it to a pre-made baby blanket, you can create a comforting gift that a baby will treasure.
Step 1
Pick an animal whose head you want to sew. The best candidates are those with a distinctive head outline, such as a cat, dog, rabbit, bear, frog, or monkey.
Step 2
On the cardstock, sketch the front shape of the animal's head, adding roughly 1/4 inch to the edges beyond the intended finished size. Then cut out the template with scissors.
Step 3
Place the template on the fleece and trace around it with the marker. Flip the template over and trace it again. Cut out both traced shapes.
Step 4
With the sewing needle and embroidery thread, embroider the facial features onto the front head piece. You can use simple stitches and dots to create eyes, a nose, a mouth, whiskers, spots, and other details.
Step 5
Place the two fleece head pieces together with their right sides facing inward; the embroidery should be on the inside. Using the needle and sewing thread, stitch around the sides about 1/4 inch from the edges, leaving the bottom open.
Step 6
Turn the sewn piece right side out. Fold down one corner of the baby blanket to create an edge that matches the width of the head's bottom. Sew the front bottom of the head over this folded edge.
Step 7
Push the folded corner inside the head, then stuff the head with polyester filling. Finally, sew the back of the head to the back of the blanket, aligning it directly behind the front piece's seam line.
