Prevent your suitcase from becoming musty by cleaning it after every use.

Before you start packing for a journey, check that your suitcase is clean and fresh. Suitcases that sit in storage for extended periods can develop a musty smell due to lack of use. This odor is not a problem—it just happens when a suitcase has been stored for a long time. You can keep your belongings from picking up that smell by cleaning the suitcase ahead of time. With a little preparation and effort, removing the musty odor is simple.

Step 1

Empty everything out of the suitcase. There might be items left over from your previous trip. Keep any souvenirs you want and throw away trash or travel-sized products you won't use again.

Step 2

Let the suitcase air out for a full day. Unzip all compartments and the main section. Place it somewhere with a steady flow of fresh air, like a garage or a well-ventilated spot in your home where air circulates constantly.

Step 3

Use a vacuum to remove dirt, dust, and debris from the inside. Attach the hose and go over every corner and pocket thoroughly.

Step 4

Check the instructions on the gentle fabric cleaner to confirm it is safe for your suitcase. Try it on a small, hidden area first. Wait five minutes and check if the fabric shows any damage. Always test the cleaner on a small area before applying it to the whole suitcase to make sure the material can handle it.

Step 5

Wipe down the entire suitcase with the gentle fabric cleaner. Use the sponge to cover all surfaces. Clean the handles and wheels as well, since they can get dirty during travel. Allow the suitcase to dry in the same well-ventilated area.

Step 6

Once the suitcase is completely dry, put fabric softener sheets inside. This will keep the musty smell away and leave your packed items smelling fresh.
