Building a Toy Slot Machine Out of a Cardboard Box

A slot machine is a gambling apparatus that takes a player's payment in exchange for spinning reels, then pays out based on where those reels come to rest. In a typical casino, slots rank as the most played game and also generate the largest share of revenue.

Step 1

Choose one outer side of the cardboard box and cover it entirely with white paint. This white surface will serve as the backdrop for the designs that follow.

Step 2

Using black paint, draw a border that is 1/2 inch wide around the edges of the white-painted side.

Step 3

Add two black vertical lines across the painted side, spacing them so the surface is split into three rectangles of equal size. These rectangles stand for the viewing windows of the slot machine.

Step 4

Inside each viewing window, paint a vertical row of three different kinds of fruit. Fruit images are commonly used on slot machines to show reel positions and the payout that results.

Step 5

On the adjacent face, the one directly to the right of the painted side, paint a thin vertical line measuring 1 inch. This line represents the coin slot.

Step 6

Paint a black lever so that it sits centered on the right-hand side. With that, your cardboard slot machine is finished.
