Turning Spent Bic Lighters Into Tiny Stash Boxes

Rather than throwing away disposable Bic lighters once they run dry, you can repurpose the empty casing into a compact hidden container for small items.

Bic lighters can either come in transparent or opaque containers.

Because Bic lighters are sold in many kinds of shops and stand out thanks to their recognizable form and frequently bright colors, they rank among the most widely used disposable lighters. Even so, once the fuel is gone, the usual response is to throw them out. Repurposing an old, empty lighter into a small container offers a thrifty and distinctive way to create a miniature carrying case that tends to escape notice. These little containers can also serve as an inventive way to wrap tiny gifts, for example gift certificates.

Step 1

Set the lighter down on your work surface. Make certain all butane has been released by pressing and holding the red fuel release button located on the back, or by attempting to ignite it.

Step 2

Position the hacksaw so it sits 1/8-inch above the bottom of the lighter. At that point, saw gradually through the lighter until the cap and the bottom section come away as one piece. Put that piece to one side.

Step 3

Using the utility knife, remove any internal compartments inside the lighter, then smooth the edges with sandpaper. The result is a small hollow space where items can be stored.

Step 4

Work the sandpaper over the bottom edges of the lighter, both inside and out, until they are no longer sharp.

Step 5

Take the bottom piece you set aside and sand its edges until the white cap is fully revealed. Keep sanding until the piece slides back into the bottom of the lighter without resistance.

Step 6

Put whatever you intend to store into the open bottom of the lighter. Reattach the white piece by pushing it back into the bottom. To get the contents out again, simply pry the bottom of the lighter off.
