DIY Lamp Oil Using Isopropyl Alcohol and Water

You can create your own lamp fuel by combining isopropyl alcohol with distilled water, and optionally adding essential oil for scent. The alcohol should be the 91 or 99 percent variety found in stores selling rubbing alcohol; rubbing alcohol itself is not suitable. Always label the storage container to avoid mix-ups with rubbing alcohol.

Make oil lamp fuel at home using alcohol and water.

The fuel for an oil lamp consists of isopropyl alcohol mixed with distilled water. To give the lamp oil a pleasant scent, essential oil can be included. Isopropyl alcohol with an alcohol content of 91 or 99 percent is typically found in stores that sell rubbing alcohol. However, rubbing alcohol itself is not a good choice for making oil lamp fuel. Be sure to mark the container where you keep the mixture so it is not mistaken for rubbing alcohol.

Step 1

Add 1 teaspoon of distilled water to the bottle of isopropyl alcohol.

Step 2

Add 1/2 teaspoon of essential oil to the bottle of isopropyl alcohol.

Step 3

Put the lid back on the bottle and shake it well to blend everything together.

Step 4

Write a label for the bottle. Your homemade oil lamp fuel is now ready to use.
