If you enjoy gathering rocks that are colorful and interesting, you may be intrigued to find out that these stones possess a concealed shine that only a rock polisher can uncover. Rock polishers work by abrading the outer layer of rough rocks to different extents, eventually turning them into stones that are smooth and full of life. You can display your polished stones as a conversation piece, as decorative touches for your home, or simply because they bring happiness to you and those around you.

Step 1

Remove the barrel from a rock polisher and insert a funnel into its opening. Add 1/2 cup of coarse sand, 1 cup of water, and 1/2 cup of rocks. Reattach the barrel to the rock polisher and let it run for one week. During this time, the coarse sand will wear away the most significant rough patches on the rocks.

Step 2

Empty the barrel's contents into the fine strainer and wash the rocks with water.

Step 3

Put the funnel back into the barrel opening and add 1/2 cup of medium-coarse sand, 1 cup of water, and the rocks. Secure the barrel on the rock polisher and run it for another week. The medium-coarse sand will even out the surface, giving the rocks a rounded shape.

Step 4

Pour the barrel's contents through the fine strainer and rinse the rocks with water.

Step 5

Insert the funnel into the barrel opening once more and add 1/2 cup of fine sand, 1 cup of water, and the rocks. Attach the barrel to the rock polisher and run it for a final week. The fine sand will buff the rounded rocks until they look shiny and glossy.

Step 6

Drain the barrel's contents through the fine strainer and rinse the rocks with water. Spread the rocks onto a towel to dry.
