How to Repaint Furniture Previously Coated with Minwax Polycrylic
Minwax Polycrylic is a water-based finish, so when repainting such a piece, you must use water-based products. Oil-based paint will peel, so acrylic paint and water-based primer are needed. The process involves sanding, priming, and applying two coats of acrylic paint.

Give your furniture a face lift by refinishing it.
Before repainting any piece of furniture, it helps to determine what finish was originally used. If the piece has a Minwax Polycrylic finish, avoid covering it with an oil-based paint, as this will cause peeling. Since Polycrylic is water-based, you need to repaint with a water-based paint like acrylic.
Step 1
Use 300-grit sandpaper to sand the entire piece thoroughly, removing the Minwax Polycrylic finish. This process can be quite messy, so it is best to work outdoors.
Step 2
Take a wet cloth and wipe down the piece to eliminate dust and debris.
Step 3
Pour some primer into a paint tray after opening the can.
Step 4
Apply a single coat of primer to the whole piece.
Step 5
Let the primer dry overnight.
Step 6
Apply the first coat of acrylic paint and let it dry overnight, then add a second coat.
