Crafting a Decorative Wreath from a Hanger and Plastic Bags

Store-bought custom wreaths often carry a hefty price tag of fifty dollars or more. With just a wire hanger and a box of cheap sandwich bags, you can assemble a surprisingly refined wreath at home. This project uses common household items and allows for personalized touches like ribbons or seasonal ornaments.

Buying a custom-made wreath can be expensive, often costing fifty dollars or more for something unique. Rather than paying that amount, you can create your own using low-cost supplies that are probably already in your home. Constructed from a wire clothes hanger and inexpensive sandwich bags, the finished wreath has a surprisingly elegant look. The clear bags come together to form a shimmering white wreath that you can customize however you like. Attach small baby toys to make a baby shower decoration, or add a bright red bow for Valentine's Day.

Step 1

Bend the clothes hanger into a circular shape. This will serve as the wreath's base. Keep the hook intact, since it can be used to hang the wreath when it's done. If you'd rather not have the hook, either fold it down or snip it off with wire cutters.

Step 2

Fold each sandwich bag in an accordion style so it becomes a long strip of plastic.

Step 3

Attach the bags to the wire frame one by one, tying them on. To achieve a denser wreath, alternate the direction the knots face. As you go, press the bags closely together to create a full look. Keep adding bags until the wire circle is completely covered.

Step 4

Puff up the bags to conceal the knots around the frame, and use scissors to even out any uneven ends.

Step 5

Decorate your wreath by using a hot glue gun to attach ribbons, bows, ornaments, flowers, or other embellishments.
