Many people know that rotating a mattress every six months helps it maintain its shape, but regular deodorizing is also important for keeping it smelling clean. This do-it-yourself method shows you how to freshen up a mattress using baking soda and essential oils, which work together to absorb unwanted smells and leave behind a clean, pleasant aroma.

Step 1: Portion the baking soda
Put one cup of baking soda—a natural odor neutralizer—into an empty shaker or container.

Step 2: Include the essential oil
Drop 10 drops of lavender essential oil into the baking soda. This is optional, but it gives your mattress a subtle, pleasant fragrance and may promote relaxation.

Step 3: Combine by shaking
Secure the lid back on the container and shake it thoroughly.

Applying Your Homemade Deodorizer to the Mattress
Scatter a liberal amount of the mixture over your mattress and let it sit for 15 to 30 minutes. After that, use a handheld vacuum or the attachments on your regular vacuum to gently remove all of the baking soda mixture from the bed.
