DIY Solutions for Keeping Stainless Steel Appliances Spotless

Adding stainless steel appliances can give any kitchen a modern boost, even if you're only replacing a single item rather than renovating the entire space. However, the material—though called stainless—still attracts smudges, dust, dirt, and streaks. Store-bought cleaners designed to maintain that shine often contain ingredients that are toxic and not ideal for household use. Mixing your own cleaning solutions is an effective way to avoid bringing those chemicals into your kitchen while still achieving a polished finish.
Cleaning
For basic cleaning, most gentle soaps will do the job—regular dish soap applied with a sponge or cloth works well. Another option is to combine 1 cup of vinegar with 2 cups of water in a spray bottle and spritz it onto the appliance. When facing greasy buildup, a paste made from baking soda can help. Put 2 or 3 tablespoons of baking soda into a bowl, then gradually add water (about a teaspoon at a time) until the mixture forms a paste with a consistency similar to toothpaste. Apply a small amount to a non-abrasive sponge or scrub pad and gently scrub the surface.
Polishing
Once cleaned, the appliance might still show streaks or spots. To address this, apply a couple of teaspoons of rubbing alcohol to a microfiber cloth or pad. Wipe the cloth along the grain of the stainless steel until you've covered the entire surface. The alcohol evaporates on its own, so no rinsing is required. If you prefer not to use rubbing alcohol, white vinegar can be applied in the same manner. Alternatively, you can create a cornstarch rinse: dissolve two teaspoons of cornstarch in a bowl with one cup of warm water, whisking until no lumps remain. Dip a rag or microfiber cloth into the mixture and wipe the appliance along the grain. After using this solution, dry the surface with a clean, dry cloth.
