An uncleaned toilet with scratches looks extremely dirty, and cleaning it can be a frustrating task. Toilet cleaners alone often fail to remove all dirt and grime; getting rid of stain buildup requires additional steps. With a few items from a hardware store and grocery store, you can tackle those unsightly stains and scratches.

Step 1

Shut off the water supply to the toilet by closing the valve.

Step 2

Flush the toilet to empty the bowl. If any water remains, remove it with a cup or towel.

Step 3

Pour vinegar into the bowl until the stain or scratch is covered, plus an extra 2-inch margin around it.

Step 4

Sprinkle baking soda over the stain and vinegar, and let it fizz. You might need to add more vinegar to activate the baking soda. Allow the mixture to sit for 30 minutes; this helps penetrate and break down the stain.

Step 5

Apply more vinegar to the stain or scratch, then gently scrub with the fine drywall sandpaper. This helps smooth the scratch and lift the stain. Avoid pressing too hard, as you could gouge the porcelain.

Step 6

Turn the water supply back on and flush to rinse the bowl.

Step 7

If needed, repeat the steps. Deep stains or scratches might require more than one application.
