Cleaning Up Urine Spills on a Mattress: A Step-by-Step Approach

A urine-soaked mattress should be dealt with right away to prevent lingering stains and smells. Common household items are often enough to get the job done, though you might need to sleep elsewhere for a night while the mattress dries.

Keep your mattress clean and free of stains.

When a mattress has been soiled by urine, acting quickly helps keep both the stain and the smell from setting in. Many of the items required for cleanup are likely already in your home. You may have to arrange to sleep somewhere else for a single night while the mattress is being treated, but the payoff is a clean, comfortable bed for all the nights that follow.

Step 1

Take off all bedding and launder it. Any pad or cover on the mattress should also be removed and washed.

Step 2

If the stained spot is still damp, press a towel onto it to absorb as much liquid as you can. Standing or sitting on the towel can help draw out moisture that has soaked deep into the mattress.

Step 3

Apply hydrogen peroxide to the affected area, or use a mixture made of equal parts white vinegar and water. Let the liquid remain on the spot for a minimum of five minutes, then use a fresh, clean towel to blot away the moisture.

Step 4

Let the area air-dry, then scatter baking soda across the mattress surface. The baking soda takes up any leftover moisture and assists in removing stubborn odors. Let it sit on the mattress through the night. The following day, run a vacuum over the mattress to clear away the baking soda, then remake the bed with clean bedding.
