Napkin rings can bring a refined look to any table arrangement, whether the occasion is an informal gathering or a festive meal. Making them yourself is an option worth considering instead of purchasing them. These golden wire napkin rings cost little to produce, allow for personal touches, and a half-dozen set takes roughly 15 minutes to complete.

Supplies needed for gold wire napkin rings

Step 1: Wind the wire onto the pipe

Grip the PVC pipe in one hand to serve as the napkin ring mold, then press one end of the gold wire down on top of it using your thumb. With your free hand, wind the wire tightly around the PVC form, passing over the end your thumb is holding, until you complete one full wrap.

Step 2: Add more wraps and form a hook

Keeping the wire's end pressed firmly under your thumb, keep winding the wire around the PVC form 12 times, making sure the wire crosses over itself several times. Continue to pin the end with your thumb, since this helps the wire hold its napkin ring form after completion. With the needle-nose pliers, grasp the end of the wire that your thumb is holding in place and bend it to create a small hook.

Step 3: Seal the hook

Press the wrapped wire firmly against the PVC form, then loop the loose end of the wire around the hook you just made. While keeping the loose end of the wire secured with one thumb, use the needle-nose pliers to pinch the hook shut.

Step 4: Trim the extra wire

While still holding the loose end of the wire with one thumb, squeeze the loop created by the loose wire tightly to close it. Use the wire-cutting section of the needle-nose pliers to remove the remaining wire.

Step 5: Take the wire off the form

After cutting the excess wire, confirm that both ends are pinched tightly shut, then slide the wrapped wire off the PVC form. Ease the wrap open slightly so the napkin ring band's width becomes a bit more spread out.

Ways to Personalize Your Napkin Rings

Personal touches can take the form of:

  • Color/Finish (silver, copper, black-coated)
  • Size (using a PVC form with a larger or smaller diameter)
  • Design (twisting wires before wrapping, adding additional wires, bending in a curlicue form, attaching to the top and bottom of wrapped wires)

Thanks to the wire's thickness, the napkin ring keeps its shape and does not crush easily. Just slip the napkin rings over folded napkins and set them in the center of plates to add a lovely detail to your table setting.
