A gap between the headboard and mattress is annoying but easily fixed.

A headboard can bring a vertical element to your bed and enhance the room's decor. However, it's not unusual for the headboard to sit slightly apart from the mattress, leaving a gap. This tends to occur with floating metal bed frames. Beyond looking unattractive, that gap can let pillows and other small items slide down behind the mattress. Fixing this minor problem usually requires just a simple adjustment.

Step 1

Take a look at the space between the mattress and the headboard to check for anything blocking them from meeting. If you find an obstruction, clear it away and attempt to shove the mattress back into position. Should that fail, take the mattress off the bed entirely.

Step 2

Go to the foot of the bed and push the box spring toward the headboard until it makes contact. Often, a gap between the headboard and mattress exists simply because the box spring is not lined up properly.

Step 3

If the gap remains, remove both the mattress and the box spring. The bed frame is probably the culprit—sometimes its protruding edges collide with the headboard and create a gap. To fix this, adjust the frame so it is wider than the headboard: unhook it in the middle and expand the frame, then insert the hook into the next available groove. Push the frame back against the headboard. Reinstall the box spring and mattress, and push them so they sit flush with the headboard.
