A valance over a curtain provides a customized look.
Installing a curtain valance can enhance the style of a single room or the whole house. In traditional home decor, a valance creates an appealing border around a window. Valances are positioned above the window on a rod that is separate from the main curtains or blinds; the curtain rod's location helps decide where to mount the valance. A valance might conceal the top of a curtain or blind, or it can be used alone above a window for a custom window treatment.
Step 1
Use a tape measure to measure the window's width. Halve that number to find the window's center, then make a light pencil mark on the wall above the window.
Step 2
Stretch the measuring tape from one end of the valance rod to the other to locate its center. Lightly mark the rod's center with a pencil.
Step 3
Determine the height of the decorative part above the rod casing, known as the header. Headers vary in size; if yours is small, adjust accordingly.
Step 4
Measure downward from the ceiling or wall trim to the curtain rod. This establishes the highest point where the valance can be installed. If your valance has no header, the rod's mounting position is not restricted.
Step 5
Decide where to hang the valance rod by measuring roughly 1 inch above the curtain rod or the top of the blind. Do not exceed the highest point you measured from the ceiling downward. Position it over the window and choose what looks best for your room.
Step 6
Align the two pencil marks to center the valance rod. Attach the right side of the rod using the mounting clips provided in the package, screwing them into place.
Step 7
Place your level on top of the valance rod and adjust it up or down until it reads level. Mark the left side and screw the clip into place. Slide the valance onto the rod through its pocket to secure it.
