The mood and feel of an office matter greatly, as they can either hinder or boost your productivity. Proper lighting is key. It not only helps you work accurately, but it can also make the space feel more cheerful and lively. An office without windows can easily turn gloomy and feel like a dungeon. Such a space requires a strong lighting plan that goes all out to brighten and illuminate the area.

Step 1

Choose a wall color that adds brightness, such as warm white, cream, or pale yellow. Make the walls as bright as possible. Even if they are already a medium-light shade like mauve or light blue, you should lighten them further.

Step 2

Install a ceiling lamp in the middle of the ceiling. This serves as your main light source, providing a moderate amount of illumination throughout the room.

Step 3

If space allows, put a lamp in each of the four corners. To do this, get floor lamps along with very small accent tables and table lamps. In some very small offices, one corner often cannot fit a lamp because the door opens into it. In that case, aim for three out of four corners.

Step 4

Get an artificial sunlight desk lamp for your desk. This is the most important spot in the office, since you will spend most of your time there. An artificial sunlight lamp will make you feel as if warm sunlight is shining on you while you work.

Step 5

Hang a mirror on two of the walls to bounce existing light around. The mirrors will also make the room seem larger than it really is.
