Crafting Fake Torches to Complete a Medieval Bedroom Look
A medieval-themed bedroom lets a young fan of kings, castles, and Middle Ages tales immerse herself in a world that matches her passions. Making fake torches is a practical, hands-on project that gets her involved in decorating her own space.

In medieval times, torches provided an important source of light.
A child or teen who loves everything about kings, castles, and medieval stories can find a fantasy retreat in a bedroom decorated with that theme. One way to let her take part in the room's decoration is by making faux torches together. To hang a torch beside the bed or door, wrap the finished torch with copper wire, install an eyehook in the wall, and thread the wire through the eyehook to hold the faux torch in place.
Step 1
Flip a plastic, paper, or Styrofoam cup upside down so its opening faces the table. Set a cardboard tube on the bottom of the cup and draw around it with a pencil. Remove the traced circle from the cup.
Step 2
Spread glue along the edge of the cut hole. Push the cardboard tube through the hole until it reaches the cup's rim. Allow the glue to dry for a minimum of two hours.
Step 3
For the paper mache paste, combine one part flour with one part water. Soak newspaper strips in the mixture, then wrap them around the torch base. Apply three layers of newspaper strips, overlapping them, to cover the base. Leave it to dry overnight.
Step 4
Paint the outside of the paper mache with black acrylic craft paint. On the front, add a design that suggests the medieval period, such as a knight, a gothic cathedral, or a coat of arms.
Step 5
To form the flames of the faux medieval torch, cut pieces of red, orange, and yellow tissue paper and push them into the top of the cup and cardboard tube.
