Ways to Set Up Betting Boards for a Kentucky Derby Gathering

Throwing a Kentucky Derby get-together lets you involve loved ones in a lively day. To honor the race's long-standing customs, ask both women and men to don hats, which are considered lucky. Women are encouraged to choose wide-brimmed 'Southern Belle' styles, while men are encouraged to choose 1920s fedoras. Plan a barbecue and have attendees contribute dishes and beverages. Making Derby betting displays is another way to join in the spectacle and take pleasure in the occasion.

The Kentucky Derby is a classic event.

A Kentucky Derby party offers a wonderful chance to bring family and friends together for a day of enjoyment. To stay true to the Derby's atmosphere and its hundred-year heritage, ask both women and men to wear hats, which are thought to bring good fortune. More specifically, women are encouraged to pick wide-brimmed "Southern Belle" hats, while men are encouraged to pick fedoras from the 1920s. Set up a barbecue and have guests bring food and drinks. Another way to take part in the excitement and elegance and to enjoy the event is by building Kentucky Derby betting displays.

Step 1

Make a betting display on poster board. Lay a 24- by 36-inch white poster board on a table. Down the left side of the board, list the names of every guest, spacing them evenly. Across the top of the board, list the names of all competing horses, spacing them evenly. Draw horizontal and vertical lines to form a grid over the board's surface. Use check marks to match each guest's name with the horse they are betting on. Attach the display to the wall with tacks or tape so it can serve as a visual guide throughout the party.

Step 2

Set up a laptop display by visiting the Kentucky Derby website. From the main menu bar, select "Wager." On the following page, select "New to Wagering." Review the rules and methods for wagering. Go to the Twin Spires website, which is the Derby's official online betting resource page. Set up a betting account. Follow the instructions and place your bet. During the race, keep the laptop on display to track odds-making and up-to-the-minute betting information as the event unfolds. If needed, use more than one laptop so others can display and follow the betting process as well.

Step 3

Set small model horses around a table, with each one standing for a horse racing that day. Add the jockey's name, the horse's name, and a short description of the horse. Also include betting odds. Put betting slips and pencils on the table. Invite guests to complete betting slips and place them beneath the feet of the horse they choose. Put a bouquet of roses in the center of the table, since roses are the official flower of the Kentucky Derby.
