Your hibiscus craft begins with an assortment of colorful papers.
Bring a tropical flair to your summer get-together with handmade paper hibiscus flowers. These eye-catching blooms work well for luau-themed crafts and celebrations. Hibiscus blossoms typically come in pink, red, orange, yellow, or white, and a large number of them feature a center in a contrasting hue. You can craft them using colored card stock, ordinary paper, or origami paper. For those who prefer not to sketch the flower shapes themselves, a downloadable template can be printed, cut, and traced instead.
Step 1
Either sketch the silhouette of a hibiscus by hand on your colored paper, or obtain a template for the petals and leaves online. The hibiscus bloom has five curved petals arranged in a star-like pattern, positioned relatively close to one another.
Step 2
Cut the hibiscus shape out of the paper. Take one petal and wrap its tip around a pencil to give it a curl, then slide the pencil out. Repeat this curling action on the remaining petals. Make sure the petals curl outward rather than inward.
Step 3
Gently press down on the middle of the flower, then tweak the petals until the bloom appears balanced and elegant.
Step 4
On the contrasting paper, draw a small center piece featuring five petals. Cut this center out and bend its petals upward. Using a sharp object, make a small hole at the middle of the contrasting piece.
Step 5
On yellow card stock, draw a stamen — a thin strip that widens toward the top. Cut the stamen out.
Step 6
Thread the narrow end of the stamen through the hole in the contrasting center. Slightly fold over the tip of the stamen to secure it. Apply glue to the middle of the stamen and attach it to the center of the hibiscus flower.
Step 7
If you like, draw leaves on the green paper — shaped like teardrops, pointed at one end and curved at the other. Cut the leaves out and glue them onto the back of the paper hibiscus.
