Repair ceramic vases yourself to save money over costly restoration.
Vases, which add a distinctive decorative element to any space, are available in many shapes, sizes, and materials—ranging from plain glass to polished and etched metal to the delicate beauty of porcelain and ceramic. Because ceramic is easy to work with, it is a favored medium for numerous artists, and ceramic vases frequently feature elaborate physical and painted designs. If dropped or hit, ceramic vases break easily, but they can be repaired.
Step 1
Inspect the vase to assess how severe the damage is. Minor chips and cracks can be fixed with ceramic adhesive or cement, whereas larger or uneven damage might call for putty to help with cosmetic restoration.
Step 2
For any cracked or chipped areas, sand both broken edges. Take care to keep the sandpaper on the broken edges and not on the face. Remove the sand using a sponge moistened with warm water, then wipe with a clean cloth.
Step 3
Put ceramic cement or polyvinyl adhesive on one of the broken edges. Hold the broken edges together for two minutes, then use a razor blade to scrape off any excess cement.
Step 4
Place masking tape over the crack or chip to keep the pieces together. Position the vase so that stress on the damaged area is minimized while the cement dries. Allow at least three hours for drying.
Step 5
For any area where a chunk of ceramic is missing, clean the edges. Use a sponge dampened with warm water, followed by a clean cloth, as before.
Step 6
Fill the missing chunk with wall putty. Smooth the putty so it follows the vase's contour. Let the putty dry completely.
Step 7
Choose a paint that closely matches the color of the missing section. Apply paint to the dried wall putty in a way that matches the design of the original missing section. Several coats might be required to darken the paint's color.
Step 8
Once the paint has dried, apply a clear sealant to the area. For internal damage, add putty and sealant if the vase will be used to hold water.
