Reinforcing Curtain Rods with Support Hardware

When drapery rods span wide windows or carry heavy fabrics, adding a support bracket can prevent sagging and potential collapse. These low-cost hardware pieces provide extra stability, helping you avoid the unpleasant surprise of curtains ending up on the floor.

Supports help strengthen curtain rods holding heavy or long drapes.

If your curtain rod is particularly long, or if you're hanging heavy drapery fabric, a support bracket becomes necessary. These affordable hardware components add strength to the rod and ease concerns about it giving way under the weight of the curtains. Sagging curtains are definitely not the aesthetic you want for your window treatments. By reinforcing the rod, you can rest easy knowing your curtains will stay in place rather than ending up in a pile on the floor.

Step 1

Take a measurement of how far the current curtain rod sits from the wall. Getting this length right is crucial—otherwise the support may either fall short of the rod or stick out beyond it.

Step 2

Find the midpoint of the wall between the two end brackets. Look for a stud near that spot and put a mark on the wall at the stud's position. This might shift the center point slightly to one side or the other.

Step 3

Hold the screw end of the support against the wall and adjust the bracket either upward or downward. The curtain rod needs to rest naturally on the support. If the support sits too low, it won't provide any real reinforcement. If it sits too high, it will push the rod upward and cause it to bow.

Step 4

Drive the rod support into the wall. These supports feature a hook at one end and a screw at the other.

Step 5

Tighten the screw firmly into the wall. For the curtain rod to sit properly on the support, the hook must be oriented facing upward.
