United Airlines, in line with many other large carriers, discourages the use of paper tickets. According to the airline's website as of March 2010, paper tickets remain an option, but if you ask for one either when you book or afterward, a $50 transaction fee applies. For E-ticket holders, United provides multiple ways to check in and receive a boarding pass.

Visit the United Airlines website. If you belong to United's Mileage Plus frequent flier program and have an online account, you can log in with your Mileage Plus number or email address along with your password. If not, you can proceed as a guest by entering your last name and one of the following: the credit card number used for the ticket purchase, the confirmation number for your itinerary, or your E-ticket number.

Step 2

Choose your seats, input your Mileage Plus number, ask for an upgrade, provide baggage details, and pay any baggage fees in advance through the website.

You can print your boarding pass right away. Alternatively, you can wait and print it at the airport using a United EasyCheck-in Kiosk. If you have bags, check them, then go through security to reach your flight. Keep in mind that United's EasyCheck-in Online opens 24 hours before your flight's scheduled departure. It closes 45 minutes before departure for domestic flights and one hour before international flights.

Swipe a major credit card at the United EasyCheck-in Kiosk. The name on the card has to match the name on your E-ticket. Instead of a credit card, you can use one of these Mileage Plus cards: Mileage Plus Premier, Premier Executive, or 1K.

Step 3

Follow the on-screen prompts, which include choices for checking bags. If you are checking a bag, you must wait for a United representative to help you. The representative will verify your ID, tag your bags, and give you a baggage claim ticket.
