A Guide to Resetting Three-Dial Luggage Locks

Three-dial luggage locks need a three-digit code to unlock. These locks either arrive with a factory-set code or start at a default like 0-0-0. The method for changing the code varies by lock model. Through experimentation, you can set a code that is simple for you to recall.

Method 1: Using a Reset Hole

Look at the top, side, and bottom of the lock to see if there is a reset hole. If you find one, first set the dials to the lock's current combination.

Next, insert the reset tool that came with the lock or the tip of an unfolded paper clip into the hole. Depending on the lock, you might need to rotate the tool or clip 90 degrees, or hold it in place while you change the combination.

Then, turn each dial slowly to the new number you want. Once all three dials show the new code, either turn the tool back to its original position or remove it from the hole. Because different locks have different requirements, you may need to try this with the clasp both open and closed. After you have set the new combination, test it, and then spin all three dials to lock the luggage.

Method 2: Resetting Without a Reset Hole (Lock Closed)

If there is no reset hole, try resetting the combination while the lock is closed.

Enter the lock's current combination and then push in on the clasp.

While keeping the clasp pushed in, enter your new combination on the dials. Let go of the clasp and scramble the numbers to relock. Test to see if the new combination works.

Method 3: Resetting Without a Reset Hole (Lock Open)

If resetting with the clasp closed does not work, open the lock using the previous combination.

Open the clasp until it clicks or stops, either at 90 degrees or 180 degrees. Try to reset the combination.

If the combination still will not set, push down on the opened clasp and then reset the combination. Release the clasp and return it to the closed position.
