A valid passport is mandatory for travel to any country outside the United States, its territories, Canada, and Mexico. Additionally, when you return from your trip, your passport serves as verification that you are permitted to re-enter the United States. In Connecticut, you have two main options for renewal: you can submit your application by mail using form DS-82, or you can visit most post offices in the state.

Step 1

Complete form DS-82 online. This form is available on the U.S. Department of State's website. Before printing, double-check that all the information you've entered is accurate and complete. Print the form using black ink on plain white paper. If you prefer not to fill it out online or encounter difficulties, you can print a blank copy and complete it by hand with black ink.

Step 2

Remember to sign and date the first page of your filled-out form. Without your signature, your renewal application cannot be processed.

Step 3

Gather your signed DS-82 form, your most recent passport, two new passport photos, and a check or money order covering the processing fee. Put everything into a padded envelope. If your name has changed since your last passport was issued, you must also include a marriage certificate or a court order documenting the name change. Write the passport agency address—which you'll find on the application form—on the envelope.

Step 4

Take the envelope to your local Connecticut post office. Choose a shipping method that allows tracking, like USPS Priority Mail with delivery confirmation or USPS Express Mail. Typically, your application will be processed within 4 to 6 weeks.
