Six-Cylinder Vehicles: Capable Towing Options for Travel Trailers

You don't need a large eight-cylinder engine to haul a travel trailer. Several modern six-cylinder models, whether front- or rear-wheel drive, offer sufficient towing capacity when you adhere to the manufacturer's guidelines. The key is to align the trailer's weight and dimensions with your vehicle's capabilities. Here are some choices to consider.

Match your travel trailer to your vehicle.

A gas-guzzling eight-cylinder engine isn't a requirement for pulling a travel trailer. Numerous six-cylinder vehicles on the market today come with improved towing ratings. As long as you stick to the manufacturer's recommendations, these six-cylinder models—both front-wheel and rear-wheel drive—can handle towing duties. It's important to pair the weight and size of the trailer you intend to pull with your towing vehicle. Take a look at these options.

Teardrop Trailers

Teardrop trailers are tiny and very light. They provide sleeping space for two inside and a cooking area under the rear hatch, making them simple to tow with a six-cylinder vehicle. Though they aren't ideal for long journeys, they work well for weekend trips or short outings. The drawback is that during bad weather, interior space is limited and there's no place for a portable toilet. Storage capacity is also minimal.

Pop-Up Campers

Another lightweight option that a six-cylinder car, van, or truck can pull with ease is the pop-up trailer. These offer more comfortable sleeping than a tent and frequently come with heaters and air conditioners for better weather protection. They measure between 8 and 18 feet in length and can sleep additional people thanks to slide-out sections. The downside: you must set up and take down the camper each time you arrive at a campsite, and it doesn't shield you well from strong winds.

Some pop-up campers feature soft sides. The tent camper lacks some amenities found in other pop-up trailers, such as an air conditioner, but it is simple to tow.

Lightweight Travel Trailers

Lightweight travel trailers, such as the Scamp, weigh between 2,000 and 4,000 pounds. Although these trailers can reach up to 30 feet in length, six-cylinder vehicles are capable of towing them. Most newer models include full bathrooms and appliances that rival those in larger recreational vehicles. They provide ample space and comfort to serve as a cozy temporary home away from home. Their aerodynamic shape also helps reduce fuel consumption.

Telescoping Trailers

Telescoping trailers, for example the 15-foot Hi-Lo travel trailer, have a travel height of 5 feet 9 inches and a camping height of 6 feet 3 inches. These campers are easy to tow and can be set up with just a switch. They come with a galley, storage, and sleeping space for as many as six people. This comfortable little home away from home is suitable for use in any season.
