Change the brake pads on a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer.

On a 2000 Chevrolet Blazer, the brake pads are essential for stopping the vehicle. The braking system consists of brake fluid, calipers, pads, and rotors. The pads are held within the calipers. When you press the brake pedal, the calipers push the pads against the rotors. Once the caliper piston fully compresses the pads, the Blazer comes to a safe stop. You should replace the brake pads before they wear down to the wear indicators, which will make an audible squeal when the pads are sufficiently worn.

Step 1

Park the 2000 Chevrolet Blazer and set the emergency brake.

Step 2

Use the tire tool to loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels.

Step 3

Place the jack under the Blazer, positioning it under the cross frame beneath the engine. Raise the Blazer and place a jack stand under the appropriate front jacking point on each side. Slowly lower the jack so the Blazer rests securely on the jack stands. Keep the jack under the Blazer in the upright position.

Step 4

Take off the lug nuts from the front driver-side wheel and pull the wheel off the hub. Set the wheel face down.

Step 5

Find the caliper mounted on the side of the rotor. Using the 10 mm Allen wrench, locate and remove the two 10 mm Allen-head bolts from the back of the caliper. Turn the bolts counterclockwise to loosen and remove them.

Step 6

Insert the flat-head screwdriver between the brake pads and the rotor. Pry back and forth until the caliper is loose enough to be removed from the rotor.

Step 7

Slide the caliper off the rotor and hang it from the steering knuckle behind the wheel hub assembly using the bungee cord.

Step 8

Remove the inner brake pad from the caliper. Place the C-clamp inside the caliper facing the outer brake pad. Turn the C-clamp clockwise to compress the outer brake pad toward the caliper cylinder. Compress the cylinder until it is fully retracted inside the caliper. Unscrew the C-clamp and take it off the caliper.

Step 9

Pull out the outer brake pad along with any accessories. Install the new brake pads into the caliper with any accessories such as shims and clips. Remove the bungee cord and secure the caliper back onto the rotor. Then reinstall the wheel.

Step 10

Repeat the same steps for the front passenger side of the 2000 Chevrolet Blazer. After changing the pads, start the Blazer and press the brake pedal in and out six times to seat the new pads against the rotor. Turn off the engine and close the hood. Raise the Blazer again, remove the jack stands, lower it to the ground, and remove the jack.
