Simple Steps to Free a Jammed Seatbelt
Kai Wood

Seatbelts are essential safety features that help keep all occupants secure while driving. Over time, though, they may become stuck or jammed. At times, this indicates a more serious issue that should be handled by a dealership. Even so, you can often troubleshoot and resolve the problem yourself with quick and simple methods.
Step 1

Try tugging on the seatbelt to disengage its auto-lock feature. When the belt is fastened, just unbuckle it from the receptacle and pull it gently away from the seat to extend more of the webbing. After that, let it slowly retract behind the seat. If it fails to snap back properly, the belt could be tangled, twisted, or jammed somewhere deep inside the retractor mechanism.
Step 2

Use a screwdriver or needle nose pliers to pry off the plastic covers that enclose the seatbelt mechanism. This will reveal the belt loop and hardware. For a back seat seatbelt, you may need to fold the seats down and locate the mechanism, which is usually found in the trunk area, often beneath the trunk's floor layer. You can get to it by lifting the floor layer where the spare tire is typically stored.
Step 3

Extend the seatbelt fully. This will reveal any tangles, kinks, or objects stuck in the belt itself or at the base of the seatbelt mechanism.
Step 4

If the seatbelt has any jams, straighten them out. Also, if any objects are lodged in the belt loop or the lower part of the belt loop, remove them using your fingers or needle nose pliers.
Step 5

Let the seatbelt retract back into position. Test it to confirm it releases and locks as it should. Once everything appears to be working correctly, you can put the plastic seatbelt mechanism covers back on or return the back seat to its original position.
