Distinguishing the Chevrolet 4.3L V-6: VIN and Casting Number Guide
Chevrolet introduced its 4.3-liter V-6, a 262-cubic-inch powerplant derived from earlier V-6 designs, in 1985, and it carried the "Vortec" badge—a label Chevrolet applied to its more sophisticated truck engines. Because it amounts to a small-block V-8 minus two cylinders, confirming its identity involves two main procedures: reading the engine code from the eighth character of the VIN, then finding the block casting number and matching it against documented 4.3L castings.

The Chevrolet 4.3L was a popular six-cylinder for a variety of truck applications.
Based on earlier V-6 designs, General Motors' Chevrolet division brought out a 4.3-liter V-6 displacing 262 cubic inches in 1985. This engine was the first to wear the "Vortec" designation, which Chevrolet used for its more advanced truck powerplants. In effect a small-block V-8 with two cylinders removed, it can be confirmed by two methods: first, decoding the engine code embedded in the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), and second, finding the casting number on the engine block and checking it against a reference list of known 4.3L castings.
Step 1
The VIN tag sits in the far corner of the dashboard on the driver's side. Viewed from outside through the windshield, this tag carries the 17-character alphanumeric VIN. The engine is indicated by the eighth position of that code. A VIN equipment code listing hosted at Angelfire.com shows that the letters "W," "X" and "Z" correspond to different versions of the 4.3L V-6.
Step 2
Next, find the block casting number. On later-model Chevrolet engines, this number is stamped into a ledge located at the rear of the engine block on the driver's side, immediately past the cylinder head. As noted on MRE-Books' small block Chevrolet engine block page, the code consists of up to eight digits.
Step 3
Take that number and check it against a list of known Chevrolet 4.3L casting numbers, such as the one available on Rapidomarine.com. That list includes a full section devoted to 4.3L castings, which identifies not only production years but also particular technical variants of the engine. Casting number "535," for instance, denotes a 1992 to 1997 4.3L roller cam engine equipped with a balance shaft and a 10-bolt timing cover.
