Taking Down the Headliner in a Chevrolet S-10

If you need to take the headliner out of a Chevy S-10, the job can be finished in a short time and does not call for advanced skills. The main risk is damaging the headliner itself: it consists of a molded foam board with felt attached to one face, so it cracks easily and often cannot be fixed after it breaks. Keep this in mind if you plan to put the same headliner back in.

There are many situations that might call for taking the headliner out of a Chevy S-10. The good news is that the job does not take long and is not especially hard to do. The caution applies if you intend to keep the headliner: it is simply a foam board shaped to fit, with felt glued onto one side. It cracks with little effort, and once cracked, repair is often not possible.

Step 1

The two front trim posts inside the S-10 should be loosened; pulling them out completely is a struggle. Take out the two trim posts at the rear.

Step 2

Move the seats as far forward as they will go so you have space to work.

Step 3

Take out the screws holding the dome light above the truck's rear window, then remove the light. Undo the screws that hold the sun visors and take the visors off.

Step 4

From the back of the cab, pull the headliner downward. Its front edge will come free of the front trim panels by sliding out. Flip the headliner onto its side and pass it out through one of the side doors.
