Replacing a Ceiling Light Crossbar for Enhanced Support
Ceiling lights rely on a crossbar mounted to an electrical box. Upgrading this crossbar is recommended for older homes or heavier fixtures, as many old crossbars are rated for only 50 pounds while some modern fixtures weigh much more.

Installing a new crossbar will ensure that your light fixtures, big or small, are secure.
Ceiling light fixtures are secured by a crossbar that attaches to an electrical box. After wiring, the fixture is fastened to both the crossbar and the box. For older residences with outdated crossbars, or when installing heavier fixtures, replacing the crossbar is advisable. Numerous older crossbars are designed to support only up to 50 lbs. Yet, many electrical light fixtures can weigh two or even three times that amount. For safety and to keep fixtures firmly in place and looking their best, an all-purpose crossbar should be installed.
Step 1
Shut off the room's main power at the circuit breaker as a safety precaution.
Step 2
With a flat-head screwdriver, unscrew and take off the old fixture's canopy. This exposes the crossbar and electrical box.
Step 3
Using the flat-head screwdriver, remove the screws holding the crossbar to the electrical box. The old fixture can now be taken down completely.
Step 4
Disconnect any wires that link the old fixture to the electrical box by twisting them off.
Step 5
Attach the new crossbar to the electrical box by driving screws with the flat-head screwdriver.
Step 6
Proceed to install the new light fixture as usual. Lift the new canopy to the ceiling, ensuring it aligns with the new crossbar. Adjust the fixture's pipe. Hand-tighten the lock nut into the crossbar. After the lock nut is secure, insert light bulbs into the fixture and restore power.
