Many homeowners choose glass tiles for their aesthetic appeal and ability to bounce light around a room. However, when the time comes to update a space, you must eliminate the existing surfaces before putting in new ones. This involves taking out old glass tiles from locations like kitchen backsplashes and bathroom walls.

Step 1

Put down drop cloths over nearby surfaces to shield them from glass dust and other debris. Put on safety glasses and gloves to guard against flying glass fragments while you work.

Step 2

Use the utility knife to slice through any caulk lines. Caulk is typically applied to glass tiles at 90-degree corners or where a backsplash meets a counter.

Step 3

Insert the utility knife into the seam between two tiles at a 45-degree angle, with the blade pointing away from you. Tap the back of the knife with a hammer as lightly as you can to separate the glass tile and its adhesive from the wall. Since glass tiles are attached with only a small amount of latex-modified thin set, you shouldn't need to hit it hard.

Step 4

Slide the tip of the pry bar into the opening left after removing one or two tiles. Work the pry bar under the tiles you want to take off, then push down on the bar's end to lever the tiles away from the wall.

Step 5

For tiles that won't budge, slip the end of the utility knife behind the tile and strike it with the hammer.

Step 6

Use the 6-inch razor blade to scrape off any leftover mortar from the wall so the surface is ready for new tiles.
