Composite vs. Acrylic Sinks: How Do They Compare?

Choosing a sink from the wide range of designs and materials on the market can feel daunting. A composite sink blends two or more materials, so its toughness and look can differ. Acrylic is a common ingredient in many composites, yet these sinks generally resist wear less effectively than others.

Picking a sink from the wide array of styles and materials on the market can feel like a daunting task. A composite sink is made from a blend of two or more materials, and its toughness and appearance can differ. Acrylic is a common ingredient in many composite sinks, yet these sinks generally resist wear less effectively than others. A plain acrylic sink is made only of acrylic and may not be very durable, though it is often a more affordable choice.

Acrylic Sinks

There are several advantages to acrylic sinks: they are simple to install, inexpensive, and have a bright finish. The downside is that they may not last as long as composites like granite or tougher materials such as stainless steel. Acrylic is a plastic, but it looks much like a porcelain enamel sink. In the kitchen, take care with these sinks to prevent nicks and scuffs from heavy pans.

Composites

A composite sink is a solid choice if you want flexibility and toughness without paying a very high price. Scratches show up less on them, especially on granite or quartz composites, since they are not coated with a different material. Another plus is that they bring in high-end material, such as granite, without a steep cost. They usually look appealing and provide flexibility because of the multiple materials they contain.

Acrylic Composites

In composite sinks, acrylic is frequently mixed with polyester, which produces a soft surface that is prone to nicks and cuts. Such surfaces are not ideal for kitchen sinks where heavy pans are washed. However, polyester/acrylic composites often give a glossy look that brightens a kitchen or bathroom, and they tend to cost less. These composites come in a range of colors.

Durable Composites

If you want a sink that lasts a long time, choose a durable composite made of quartz or granite. Quartz composites are often mixed with resin and provide toughness along with resistance to denting and scuffing. They come in many colors but usually do not have the gloss found in other materials. Quartz composites insulate heat well and can even keep dishwater warm for longer. Granite composites cost more but are extremely durable due to the high density of rocks at the surface. They tend to come in matte finishes, so they often lack a shiny look.
